Hope and dignity behind bars: Expanding mental healthcare access in prisons in Uganda & Kenya

Prisons are often hidden from public view, but within their walls, countless men and women grapple with depression, trauma, and isolation.

Since 2023, StrongMinds has been working to change that by bringing group therapy to Uganda’s prisons, and more recently supporting programs in Kenya.

This report, Hope and Dignity Behind Bars: Expanding Mental Healthcare in Uganda and Kenya’s Prisons, highlights both the urgent need for mental health care in prison systems and the transformative impact of peer-led therapy. It’s a call to see incarcerated people not just as offenders, but as human beings capable of healing, accountability, and change.
