CCHR launches groundbreaking legal reform book: Breaking the chains

The Caribbean Centre for Human Rights (CCHR) proudly announces the release of Breaking the Chains: The Fight for Justice Beyond Colonial Laws, a bold and transformative publication aimed at catalysing legal reform and promoting human dignity across the Caribbean.

This limited edition work is more than a book, it is a movement. It speaks directly to the legal and human rights challenges still shaped by the shadows of colonialism and offers an urgent call to transform the region’s justice systems.

The book is the result of the unwavering dedication of Dr. Timothy Affonso, the committed team at the Caribbean Centre for Human Rights, and an outstanding group of legal research associates. Their collective efforts have produced a resource that not only challenges entrenched legal legacies but also reaffirms a regional commitment to equity, justice, and the dignity of all people.

“We created this book as a tool for empowerment and a catalyst for advocacy,” said Dr. Affonso. “Our goal is to support a new generation of legal minds ready to reshape the Caribbean’s legal landscape.”

Breaking the Chains also features a compelling foreword by the esteemed Dr. Lloyd Barnett, whose lifelong dedication to human rights has enriched this work and continues to inspire legal advocates throughout the region.

This publication reflects the broader mission of CCHR proudly supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Open Society Foundation (OSF) to defend and advance the rights of Caribbean people and all who seek refuge on our shores. From strategic litigation to direct legal assistance, CCHR remains at the forefront of protecting those most marginalised and vulnerable, including refugees and asylum seekers fleeing persecution.

Breaking the Chains is now available in a limited edition run. Legal professionals, advocates, educators, and community leaders are invited to request a copy and stand with us in this vital campaign for justice.
