Ending homeless criminalization: enforcing human rights

NHLC: The New York Human Right to Housing Campaign (NY-HR2H) invites you to a discussion on the Criminalization of Homelessness featuring UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, Balakrishnan Rajagopal.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s regressive Grants Pass ruling in June 2024, over 300 cities and localities have enacted legislation criminalizing people experiencing street homelessness.

The criminalization of homelessness, poverty, and the housing crisis at large have worsened in New York, a deeply unaffordable city with nearly 3 million rent-burdened households.

On Thursday, October 16th at New School University, the rapporteur will discuss his findings in advance of his report to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, October 17th.

In addition to Mr. Rajagopal sharing his findings on criminalization, the event will include a discussion on the Universal Periodic Review and a roundtable discussion moderated by former NYC Chief Housing Officer Jessica Katz.

Other featured speakers include Siya Hegde, National Homelessness Law Center; Christine Quinn, CEO of Women in Need (WIN); Leah Goodridge, NYC housing lawyer; and Fitzroy Christian of Community Action for Safe Apartments (CASA).
