Ending homelessness

SDG 1 & SDG 11 – How to eradicate poverty and provide adequate, safe and affordable housing

Poverty eradication, as the very first goal of the UN Agenda 2030 with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals, has unfortunately again become increasingly relevant due to the multiple crises of our time including the pandemic, the energy crisis and inflation, the war against Ukraine and the climate crisis. Adequate, safe, and affordable housing is crucial to reduce poverty, as emphasized in SDG 11.1, which aims to provide access to such housing for all by 2030.

In human rights law, article 25 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights  recognizes housing as part of the right to an adequate standard of living. However, innovative social policies are required to address housing challenges, achieve these goals and fulfil these rights. Therefore, the question arises: Can we end homelessness through prevention measures such as Housing First?
