Envisioning Just Futures: Building an intersectional feminist movement to challenge criminalization

4th Asia Pacific Feminist Forum, Chiang Mai, Thailand. 12-14 September 2024.

This workshop is convened by Just Futures Collaborative, in partnership with Colombo Urban Lab and the Campaign to Decriminalise Poverty and Status.

Just Futures Collaborative is an independent feminist initiative which aims to build global cross-movement strategies for challenging criminalization, promoting human rights, and protecting democracy.

Colombo Urban Lab’s mission is to produce knowledge on equitable and sustainable cities in Sri Lanka,with a focus on themes such as infrastructure, food environment, social security and public space.

Campaign to Decriminalise Poverty and Status is a coalition of organizations from across the world that advocate for the repeal of laws, reform of policies and change in practices on poverty, status and activism.

This workshop aims to brings diverse feminist movement-actors together, to collectively imagine, interrogate and strategize. Facilitators will weave together perspectives from criminal justice reform, feminist activism, and critical urban planning approaches, with the aim of moving workshop participants towards strategies which push back against criminalization and address harm and violence through holistic, rights-based means.

Key questions driving the workshop:

  • What are key criminalization trends impacting feminist, human rights and allied movements in Asia right now? 
  • How are these trends connected to broader attacks on democracy and human rights? 
  • How can movements work together to transform social, state and movement norms with regard to criminalization and reduce reliance on criminalization?
