Following the national conference on decriminalization and re-classification of petty offences held in Nairobi in March 2017, and further to research findings from the audit of the criminal justice system in Kenya previously done by LRF/RODI, the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya committed to set up a committee to steer criminal justice reforms process in Kenya and review of penal laws including laws that criminalize petty offences.
The Committee was gazetted on 23rd June 2017 and ICJ Kenya’s Mr. Edigah Kavulavu is a member.
Further, ICJ Kenya was asked to develop the terms of reference for the committee and as such, ICJ Kenya managed to include TOR 5&6, specific to the decrim campaign. ICJ Kenya is currently waiting to provide technical support to the committee through research and information to inform the committee’s work and resulting recommendations.Below are excerpts of the Gazette Notice and Terms of Reference for the committee.
