Uganda Launches Coalition to Decriminalize Petty Offences

21 Civil society organizations have formed the Uganda Coalition to decriminalize petty offences. The coalition was formed at a 2-day retreat convened by the Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum (HRAPF) a member of the regional network on decriminalization of petty offences. Private individuals including the Uganda Human Rights Commission and the Equal Opportunities Commission also joined the coalition.

The Coalition’s Vision is a just and equitable Uganda where criminalization is not based on social-economic or any other vulnerabilities.

The Coalition’s Objectives are:

  • To push for decriminalization of petty offences through strategic litigation in Uganda
  • To use evidence-based advocacy to advocate for decriminalization and declassification of petty offences in Uganda
  • To network and partner with like-minded stakeholders at national, regional and international level to decriminalize petty offences in Uganda
  • To establish, maintain and sustain a coalition against petty offences in Uganda.
