Gelovasio Kathurima, Mombasa, Kenya

I went to a hotel to collect my payment. When l entered, I found a Mombasa Municipal Council employee who told me to join a group of people they had arrested. I left my motorbike parked outside the hotel. They demanded a bribe and l gave them KSh1,000 (US$10) but they wanted KSh2,000 ($20). Instead of charging me with operating at a hotel without a license, they decided to charge me with being “drunken and disorderly”. This was 11am and by 2pm, l was in jail. My family is in Meru, over 740km away. No one has visited me. I was sentenced to one month in jail.
