Kadiatu Dumbaya

Kadiatu Dumbaya (52), popularly known as “Go Thro’way” lost her husband to Ebola 3 years ago. She hawks fruits on the streets of Freetown to enable her take care of her seven children. She is constantly harassed by police for selling without a permit. She says whenever they catch her selling without a permit, they take some of her fruits from her. She feels life is difficult because she is the sole provider for her 7 children. Under the 2007 Road Traffic Act, street trading in Sierra Leone is prohibited “on any street specified by the Authority” and can carry a fine of up to Le500,000 (about US$58) and/or a prison sentence of up to a year.
